Dude Ranches Offer Horseback Riding Vacations for Families

Horseback riding vacations are available for riders of every level. They vary from year-round dude ranches that offer excursions ranging from a few days to a few weeks, to companies that specialize in guiding trail rides through unspoiled areas of the country. Many people want to enjoy something different and perhaps forget about work and the stresses of life for a while and partly for these reasons, dude ranches have become more popular. A dude ranch offers the chance to truly relax and be removed from the distractions created by phones and other electronic devices.

There are many ranches that offer an authentic experience for those seeking a real challenge. These vacations come complete with cowboy- style cooking and basic accommodation in a bunkhouse, as well as perhaps traditional cowboy activities such as cattle herding and branding. This can be educational and fun for everyone, but particularly so for adults who want their older children to develop a work ethic.

Many people stay at the ranch and participate in various activities, although excursions and rides are generally available. Some places provide free riding lessons, often aimed at younger children and families may want to consider a ranch that specializes in families, with such things as amateur roping or riding competitions.

More seasoned riders often prefer to stay at a ranch which offers overnight camping trips and these can range from one day to several days. They demand a certain level of physical fitness as you may be in the saddle for most of the day and they are aimed more at experienced riders. If you are planning to participate in a horseback riding vacation like this, make sure you pack appropriately with plenty of loose fitting, comfortable clothes, good boots and a hat.

Most of these dude ranches can be found in the western states, especially Wyoming and Colorado. Out west there are plenty of wide open spaces and some of the country’s most spectacular scenery, some of which is challenging for the rider. These western states are often warmer and drier and if you are used to the climate of the east, you may have to adjust when you arrive for your horseback riding vacation.
