Japanese Cast Iron Teapot Proper Care

The popular Japanese cast iron teapot is actually a traditional kettle that has been in use for several generations in Japan. Originally designed for boiling water over naked flame, it has devolved into the teapot of choice in several homes all over the world. This teapot is ruggedly made and is guaranteed to last for several years. It however requires proper maintenance to get the best use out of it.
Unlike a commercial espresso coffee grinder or other modern beverage making appliances the Japanese cast iron teapot is made of cast iron. This makes it to be subject to rust over time. This is why it is important to clean the pot regularly to avoid build up of rust that could reduce its longevity. It should be rinsed and dried after every use. Tea should not be left in it for too long.
This appliance should not be washed with a dish washing machined. A very popular and effective method of getting rid of rust is to scrub the pot with olive oil and kitchen salt. A little salt is put into some olive oil and a soft cloth dipped into the mixture and used to gently scrub the body of the kettle. A soft and gentle scrub is required so as not to scratch the body. After this, liquid soap can now be used to wash of the oily dirt.
In cases where olive oil is not available, the alternative is to make a vinegar and water scrub mixture to clean the teapot. Equal amounts of vinegar and water should be mixed in a bowl. As said earlier, a soft cloth should be dipped in to the solution for scrubbing the tetsubin. With the right care a Japanese cast iron teapot will make great tasting tea for the family for several years to come.
